What is a community-based birth coach (doula)?

Community-based birth coaches are a specialized category of birth workers, also known as doulas, who provide support to individuals and families during the childbirth process within the context of their specific community. These birth workers are typically deeply connected to and knowledgeable about the communities they serve. Their services often go beyond the traditional role of labor support.

Community-based birth coaches may offer prenatal education, emotional support, and assistance before, during, and after childbirth. They understand the unique needs and challenges that individuals and families in their community may face, and they work to provide culturally sensitive and personalized care.

The term "community-based" emphasizes their commitment to serving and supporting individuals within their local community, fostering a sense of belonging, trust, and culturally relevant care during the important journey of pregnancy and childbirth.

What is the difference between therapy/counseling and coaching?

Therapy, also called counseling or psychotherapy, is a long-term process in which a client works with a healthcare professional to diagnose and resolve problematic beliefs, behaviors, relationship issues, feelings, and sometimes physical responses. The idea behind therapy is to focus on past traumas and issues to change self-destructive habits, repair and improve relationships, and work through painful feelings. In this sense, therapy focuses on the past and on introspection and analysis.

The difference between working with a person in the role of a coach and a therapist is that a coach sets clients up with a process that may be long or short-term, instead of regular sessions. In coaching, a client works with a coach, who is not working in a healthcare professional's role, in order to clarify goals and identify obstacles and problematic behaviors in order to create action plans to achieve desired results. The process of coaching takes the client’s current starting point as an acceptable neutral ground and is more action-based from that point onward.

How do I choose between coaching and behavioral health services?

The fundamentals of coaching are what distinguish it from therapy. Coaches do not diagnose, while therapists determine illnesses and pathologies, so they can be clinically treated. Therapists analyze their client’s past as a tool for understanding present behaviors, whereas life coaches simply identify and describe current problematic behaviors so the client can work to modify them. In other words, therapists focus on “why” certain behavioral patterns occur, and coaches work on “how” to work toward a goal.

When you look at a life coach vs. a therapist’s practice, it’s important to know that therapists help clients explore and understand their subconscious and unconscious minds. Their goal in this exploration is deep understanding. Coaches focus on results and actions. Their goals can be measured with key performance indicators and specific behavioral outcomes and goals.

Therapy and life coaching do share certain traits and aims. Both work to enable clients to make positive changes in their lives and become more productive. While therapists diagnose and treat from a healthcare perspective, not all therapy clients are ill. Despite occasional areas of overlap, the work and processes of therapists and life coaches are distinct.

Can I sign up for therapy or coaching services if I am under 18?

Everyone is welcome to obtain services, however, if you are under 18 years of age you will need a parent/guardian's consent. Because of the nature of my work, I believe it is in your best interest as well as mine --- better safe than sorry.

Does insurance cover birth coaching/doula services:

All insurance companies offer different benefits packages. Please contact your insurance company to determine if you have doula coverage.

The state of Delaware has passed a bill that will allow services to be covered in 2024. Please contact Medicaid for further information.

Does insurance cover coaching services?

The simple answer is no. If you must use insurance to pay for services, then I can refer you to my nonprofit organization, Tomaro's C.H.A.N.G.E. where you will have access to a team of professionally skilled behavioral health therapists. Don't worry, you will still receive the best quality care.

I would like to register for coaching services but I cannot afford the fees. Can I still register?

Unfortunately, the fees for coaching are set. However, if you really need help and would like to work with me, we can discuss the possibilities of therapy. Tomaro's CHANGE takes insurance and if you are uninsured, there is a sliding scale option for those who qualify. Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Do you prescribe medication?

NO!!! I do not prescribe any medication at all. If you are seeking a service that does, please go to Psychology Today or Google 'psychiatrists' in your area.

Will you share my information?

No, I will not share your information. I abide by the same HIPAA laws as my nonprofit (Tomaro's CHANGE Policies). I make every effort to uphold a high standard of confidentiality with regard to clients’ rights and their records. I may not disclose to any person outside business that a client is or has been seen for services, or disclose any identifying information unless:

If a client is at risk of harming him/herself or someone else

If I receive written consent from our client

If I receive a court order

If a client is faced with a medical emergency and information is needed by medical personal

If a client is suspected of any involvement in child/elderly abuse or neglect

What happens if I miss a session or group?

All appointments must be canceled or rescheduled within 24 hours or you will be charged an additional $75. All memberships are prepaid so please make sure you attend all of your sessions. I DO NOT refund and I DO NOT allow sessions to carry over. This is an investment that you are making to help you reach your goals, it is up to you to put in the work and the time.

Also, please note all denied charges or insufficient funds will be billed an extra $35.
